For our Season Two Finale I am thrilled to say my guests are Harriet Vine MBE and Rosie Wolfenden MBE perhaps better known as Tatty Devine.

They met at Chelsea School of Art in the late 90s but only became friends when Rosie’s roof fell in and she moved into Harriet’s spare room. Founded in 1999 Tatty Devine turns 18 this September and is an icon of British design.

Rosie and Harriet have gone from selling at markets to directing a brand with a seven figure turn over. Their journey has been convoluted, which we’re about to dive into, it took them from bin bags filled with discarded leather to Vogue’s Millennium issue.

Harriet Vine and Rosie Wolfenden on the Blogtacular Podcast

Tatty Devine has been seen on the catwalks and featured in just about every publication you could care to mention. They have collaborated with Rob Ryan, Belle and Sebastian, Anthony Gormley and created works for Tate, South Bank and the V&A (where they once waitressed).

In 2013 they were honoured by the Queen and received MBEs in the New Year’s Honours list for services to the fashion industry.

Today Tatty Devine has two shops including their original Brick Lane studio and a studio in Kent where their work is made by hand by a team of skilled women.

This episode is filled with inspiration, I hope you enjoy listening as much as I enjoyed recording.

Blogtacular 2017 was another year of connections, learning, fun and frolics in the heart of London. Bloggers and entrepreneurs came from across the UK, Europe and the USA to spend two days soaking up inspiration, meeting online BFFs and making plans. We have a huge number of people to thank so let’s tell you about the event and everyone who made it happen.

Blogtacular 2017 Photowalk West © Amber-Rose Photography

The event began on Friday 9th June with simultaneous video and photowalks across the city where people explored new areas and captured the magic to share on Instagram. Photowalks have been part of Blogtacular from the very first event and they are a great way to get to know people and create images for blogs & instagram. On Friday evening West Elm threw open their doors for an evening of discussion, friendship and unicorn smoothies. We were kept refreshed courtesy of Cranes who sent us their delicious ciders.

Our venue was decorated by the incredibly talented B of Pop Pop Papier, she filled the space with balloons and streamers to reflect the energy of Blogtacular. The photo backdrop alone made it onto every instagram selfie. Check out here work and keep an eye out for her Pop Pop Party Shop which is coming soon.

This year’s Market Place was filled with more indie businesses than ever before as well as our own merch stall which featured products from makers attending the conference. On the merch stall we had Geo Heaven, Finest Imaginary, Zabby Allen, Oh No Rachio, Diglot etc, Little Magpies, Claireabelle Makes & Nikki McWilliams and in the Market Place was Baking Time Club, Capture by Lucy, Elbie & Co, Planes Workshop, Fickle Craftroom, Honeywell Bakes and Jacqueline Colley.

West Elm ran a competition for attendees where they could win a room in their home £2,000 makeover plus styling advice from their expert team to create their Dream West Elm. The entries were so strong that the West Elm team decided to award two runner up prizes which went to Afro Glory & The Salted Tail who each won a £250 gift card to show their space some love.

The overall winner created a miniature replica of their dream room complete with hand-stitched corner sofa was Hester! You can see the whole makeover plan and doll’s house video on her blog. Congratulations to all of the winners, we can’t wait to see what you do next.

West Elm joined sponsors blogfoster and Mollie Makes who both held popular workshops on the day. Cath Dean, editor of Mollie Makes, gave a fascinating talk on finding your niche which was absolutely packed with useful tips to actually carve out a space for your work in a competitive space.

Simon Staib of blogfoster held 1-2-1s on the Creative Genius Bar as well as delivering a workshop on how to avoid the biggest mistakes in influencer marketing.

Do not be ashamed of wanting to make money from your blog. – Simon Staib, blogfoster

All of our speakers brought their A-game and there were so many incredible tips, catch up on #blogtacular and our 2017 Pinterest board as it fills up to find out what people’s biggest take aways were.

Blogtacular takes a huge amount of work to create and execute. There are months of meetings, brainstorming, emails and tears that go into making it so excellent. On the day it’s our team who bring it to life and we couldn’t create such a well run event without the volunteers who join us to decorate, direct, hand out, announce and everything else that we do to make your experience the best it can be.

Thanks to Sarah, Emily, Heather, Coral, Dan, Momtaz, Thabi and Natasha who all worked with us in 2017. And of course Kelly who works with Kat year round to ensure nothing is missed.

Our 2017 visual identity was created by Judy Andrews who won the goody bag competition. We loved the vibe so much that we had Judy design our programmes and on-site wall decor.

We loved the goody bag entries so much that we chose two runners up to appear on the conference note books, congratulations Cakes With Faces and Katie Moody for making the judging difficult. We will blog the full short list as they were so amazing.

This year in the bags we had: Hello Memo, Craftiosity, Crafty Fox Market & Shopping with Soul, Twin Pines, Chococo, Baking Time Club, Honeywell Bakes, Cult Vision and A Spoonful of Sugar Co alongside a Blogtacular planning notepad. Thanks to Rachel for styling the goody bag goodies shot.

Blogtacular Goody Bag designed by Judy Andrews

Each year we invite a different designer to create the goody bag for our annual conference. We want you to use and love our goody bags after the event and choosing a designer who can create something you’d want to own is one of our favourite planning stages.

In the past our bags have been designed by Zeena Shah, Nikki McWilliams, Hello DODO and DesignosaurYEAH. For 2017 we did something a little different, we opened up entries to everyone and ran our first ever design competition.

The inspiration behind opening a competition was to allow people who we wouldn’t have discovered on our own the opportunity to design the bags. As the entries poured in we were overwhelmed by the talent and creativity of our community. The entries were shortlisted and sent to our past goody bag designers who judged the competition and decided on the winner. The short list was so strong that the judges chose two runners-up whose designs were turned into the conference notebooks.

Of course we couldn’t keep this much goodness secret and so we’re sharing the full shortlist with you.

And finally our winning design. Judy’s My Tribe Love My Vibe was a favourite with the judges from the beginning. Here’s what Jam and Alis had to say:

Our reason for picking ‘My Tribe Love My Vibe’ as the winning bag design is because we feel it is bold in both design and message, a totally empowering statement which completely sums up Blogtacular for us. Also, it rhymes! So extra bonus points!

– Ali & Jam Beale, Hello DODO

Judy’s design was so strong that we hired her to design the programmes and the 2017 conference identity. We were thrilled to extend our partnership with Judy and take the conference design to the next level.

How to Make Your Blog Stats Jump off the Page - post packed full of detail at Blogtacular

One of the questions bloggers and influencers ask us most often is how to interpret their analytics. We’ve been there, staring at Google Analytics wondering what’s relevant and wondering whether our follower counts measure up.

Firstly, I can almost guarantee you’re reporting your numbers wrong. Reporting unique views and follower numbers don’t tell the whole story, they barely scratch the surface.

Once upon a time, the blog reigned supreme and people would visit you daily to read the latest post. Enter the age of social media and bloggers saw a decline in blog traffic. Now if you focused solely on the blog traffic and engagement it would be a pretty bleak outlook but at the same time blog traffic began to dip, views and engagement across social platforms grew exponentially.

The reason I tell this story is to remind you that your blog is at the centre of your social platforms. It is where the content lives but not always where it is consumed. The numbers across your whole network are the true picture of your influence.

The blogging and influencer industry is growing as a marketing sector we need to give (and request) figures which show the full picture of your audience interaction and reach. There are a few areas of your analytics which can bring to life your potential and in this post we’ll explore them.

Audience Demographics

I’m starting with the big guns – who is reading your content and where are they? Truly understanding the audience you have on each platform enables you to pitch to a client based on who is actually reading, not who you both hope is reading.

In Google Analytics you’ll need to turn on this feature, it takes a couple of moments.

Once you have it you can drill down on your audience demographics and, importantly, their interests. Building a picture of the age, gender, location and interests of the people who land on your site enables you to not only cater to your audience but also demonstrate to potential clients who their collaboration or ad will reach.

Location stats allow you to drill down further than country but to city level – great if you are targeting particular regions in a promotion. Interests give you key insights into what your visitors are passionate about.

If I look at my own blog, I can see that my audience is roughly 65% female, majority aged 25 – 44, whose top three interests are travel, food/cooking, home/decor and women’s apparel. This helps me target work I do around these four content pillars. The next big segment is 35% male aged 35 – 54 which is not insignificant to my travel, food or decor posts. I can also see that, while not the top interests of my audience, people who read my blog are interested in finance and cars so there is potential to grow that group by writing posts which appeal to these interests.

Use this information to pull together stats which help you and your client, if you’re pitching to a brand who target women’s fashion give them stats which reflect the female section of your audience.

Popular Content

You will doubtless have posts which are popular year in, year out. That precious evergreen content which Pinterest and search engines love that pulls in new readers every day.

Knowing what is popular both with regular visitors and first timers alike gives you leverage when planning paid work.

For example, my recipes do extremely well for my blog. There are certain days of the year I just know that traffic will spike thanks to these stalwarts. If I were working on a campaign featuring ingredients or a supermarket I can use this information not only to demonstrate the relevant longevity of the content but to plan recipes which will deliver the aims of the client beyond my existing audience.

Highlight this in your media pack alongside the interests of your audience.

How to Make Your Blog Stats Jump off the Page - post packed full of detail at Blogtacular

Social Media Stats

Dig into the analytics each platform gives you. Yes, on Pinterest and Instagram that means switching to business accounts to access them.

Here you’ll find stats on reach and engagement to differing degrees on each platform. Use this to build a picture of what your posts can do, demonstrate how many eyeballs are on your posts and what the % of engagement is. If on average 1,000 people see your images and 350 take action to like or comment that’s 35% engagement on actual reach (rather than dividing it into your total follower numbers). Equally, you can factor in how Insta-stories or a twitter chat impact a campaign depending on what you’re pitching.

Here’s an example. I have around 199k followers on Pinterest. Not bad, right? But the follow numbers don’t tell the story of how my content performs, here are my analytics screenshots for December.

Creating a Media Pack Which Works Hard for You

You can see that my reach and activity aren’t represented in my follower numbers, I’m consistently reaching beyond my own audience. My blog on it’s better days can average around 1,500 views but I can see from my analytics that on a bad month my blog content is engaging with upwards of 6k people a day.

Use the data in your analytics to demonstrate where you are strong and how you reach people.

Affiliate Stats

Affiliate links are a great way to not only make money but to gather proof of your influence. By linking to products you’re recommending with affiliate links you’re able to track people’s buying behaviour after they’ve clicked through.

Depending on the company you can even track the effectiveness of different links so see how they perform on Instagram versus your blog for example. Basic stats include clicks to the link and the total number of items sold. You might need to factor in returns on fashion items so you have an accurate view of total sales.

Armed with the knowledge of what your audience like to buy and what kind of numbers you can deliver you’re able to demonstrate proof of potential return on individual products.

Case Studies

Providing live case studies with content, feedback and stats from both you and the brand is a really powerful way to demonstrate the power of your influence.

You could create an unlisted page on your blog where prospective clients can click through and see examples of campaigns across a range of KPIs. Collecting these case studies together allows you to showcase a body of commercial work and how you have met the brief to deliver key targets.

Social Proof

One of the reasons influencer marketing is so powerful is that we like to know how other people feel about products and services before we buy. Your services are no different.

Collect screenshots of comments, tweets, posts and instagrams where people are letting you know they took action because of your suggestion. From buying towels to booking a five star trip this kind of feedback is invaluable as it not only shows proof of audience action but also that people will help spread the word after seeing something you post. It’s those ripples on the pond which don’t necessarily show up in your stats but are still linked to your work.

Relevant Figures

We’ve taken a look at what kind of figures you could be sharing but how do you make sure they’re relevant?

You might want to create a media pack for different scenarios, brand awareness versus product sales for example, so your analysis is tailored to the kind of work you’re being asked to do.

Keep the numbers from your analytics up to date within six months or so. You can grow a lot in a year so taking a couple of hours every few months to freshen up your numbers is time well spent.

Ultimately, the question to ask here is: does this demonstrate my full impact? If it’s a no, come back to the analytics and fill in the gaps.

We would love to know how you use this post to work on how you report your blog stats. Tweet us @blogtacular to let us know and you can also pin this post for later.

The Devastating Impact Brexit Could Have on the Blog and Influencer Business

$

In this blog post Adam Walker, The Male Stylist lays out some of the consequences of Brexit, and in particular a hard or no-deal Brexit, for our industry. It may be the most boring topic of all time but it does pose a risk to our industry and we need to discuss the many ways in which our businesses are under threat.

I encourage everyone in the community to read this, take the actions Adam suggests and to share widely. Let people in power know how this has impacted and will further impact your business online and when they inevitably knock on your door seeking election. Thank you to Adam for writing this article, you can find his full bio at the bottom of this post – Kat, Blogtacular Director

Brexit Impact for Influencers

Over the past 3 years Brexit has been an over-present issue hanging over media, politics and consumers alike, with deep divisions and anger coupling any discussion about it. Indeed, many feel the debate has become exhausting and caused significant anxiety on a daily basis.

However, the perils of Brexit (and particularly “No Deal” Brexit) have been coming to light over the past 12-18 months, painting a grim picture for both consumers and businesses alike. Influencers could find themselves at the heart of these problems with skyrocketing business costs, reduced revenues and restricted access to platforms.

Yes, influencers have a lot to lose if Brexit hits in the next 2 months and below are just a few of the biggest ways they could see their industry impacted.

Slower Internet Speeds or Higher Costs of Service

Net Neutrality (i.e. the principle that states all internet sites be treated equally in terms of speed by internet service providers) is currently enshrined within EU law and means that regardless of your size, users have the same access to your website as they do to Amazon or Facebook.

However, if we leave these standards may no longer be maintained and, as a result, internet service providers could prioritise the speeds of larger websites who pay them more over smaller ones.

Don’t believe it’s true? In 2017 when Net Neutrality was repealed in the US, both Netflix and YouTube saw their speeds choked by ISPs who they had refused to pay more for priority access compared to other sites.

Pay More for Travel or Face Data Roaming Charges…Again

Travel influencer? Love those easy trips to Rome or Paris? Your ability to move freely within the EU without paying for visas is protected by the EU’s Freedom of Movement. If we leave this agreement you could find yourself in longer queues at passport control and having to pay to enter EU countries that would have been free to enter previously.

Furthermore, if you love posting on social media whilst travelling and enjoy the same free data allowances you get in the UK, be prepared to lose that too. In 2018 multiple phone networks came forward and stated that they may be reintroducing data roaming charges to UK citizens in EU countries post-Brexit, meaning you could face similar prices to before they were abolished by the EU in 2017.

Food is Going to Cost More…

If you’re a food blogger or simply just love your food, you could see your costs for both normal and exotic ingredients increase significantly. Reuters has already reported that there is a strong likelihood of food shortages across the UK, as well as price increase on the new tariff systems resulting in costs increasing by 20-40%.

Whereas currently food can be imported into the UK fthrough the EU without tariffs or border checks, the UK would now face both on the likes of dairy, meat, fresh fruit and vegetables as well as significant hits to the standards of quality required from food.

If you want the most gruesome example of this, Google “brexit chlorinated chicken” and you can see the kind of standards we could expect from trading partners outside of the EU.

Your Rates Are Likely To Go Up

Currently HMRC allows small businesses earning under £85k per year an exemption from charging VAT on their sales. However, post-Brexit HMRC has announced that there are plans to reduce this to £76.5k meaning many more small businesses will be forced to charge VAT.

The end result here is that the services provided by an influencer will cost more but the influencer themselves won’t see any profit increase. On top of this, influencers may have to reduce their rates to keep their costs competitive with smaller influencers, meaning their income could drop.

Brexit for Bloggers

The Beauty Industry is Going to be Hit Hard

The beauty industry relies on imported goods from across the EU, relying on freedom of movement to keep costs low and reducing business overheads. As early as 2016, the beauty industry voiced concerns over how Brexit could hugely impact operating costs, access to goods and overall profits without freedom of movement of goods.

The knock-on effect here is businesses will be spending more on production and therefore have to cut elsewhere around the business, including from marketing budgets. The result being that influencer budgets are constricted or wiped out, meaning fewer opportunities and significantly lower budgets per influencer for the brands who can afford it.

On top of all of this, there have been concerns over the use of dangerous chemicals and ingredients as cheaper substitutes in cosmetics post-Brexit, including (but not limited to) Carcinogenic substances.

Your Hardware & Software is Going to Cost More

Almost no smartphones, cameras, computes or hosting companies are built or operate within the UK, most are brought into the UK on a tariff-free basis via the EU who negotiate standards and maintain competitive pricing between large tech corporations.

If Brexit happens we could see a rapid escalation in the prices of hardware and software influencers use, meaning you’ll be spending more of your revenue/profits on the tech you need to keep your content creation process as smooth as possible.

None of this Factors in a Weaker Pound

The cherry on top of this extraordinarily depressing sundae is that the pound is getting weaker by the day right now, with it currently (at the time of posting this article) being at a 34-year low.

If this continues (and all signs point to Brexit exacerbating this issue, not helping it) then the increased costs mentioned above will see a further hike as your money becomes less valuable abroad. Travel, food, products, hardware, all of it will get more expensive as your money gets weaker compared to the Euro and US dollar.

Summary: Higher Costs, Fewer Opportunities and Lower Income

The influencer industry is painfully vulnerable to the effects of Brexit and it has done very little to protect itself against any of the implications. It is a business that needs Freedom of Movement, it needs a strong currency and it needs the EU as a whole. Without it, the strain placed on many will be too much and could put them out of business in a fairly short amount of time.#

I’ve only mentioned how this can affect your business but Brexit threatens the supply of medicine (Insulin and Isotopes used in Radiotherapy have been highlighted as concerns for supply after Brexit) meaning people could die, EU citizens could be deported without reason and the NHS could be sold off to private companies meaning free healthcare will be eradicated. This is a remarkably dangerous time for all but the most wealthy and we need to be aware of these dangers.

What can I do?

Use your democratic rights wisely.

  • Sign and share petitions,
  • Write to your MP every week, every day if you like saying you want to Revoke Article 50 or you want a good deal for the UK.
  • Vote for Remain-focused parties who want to maintain the protections you have as a small business.
  • Go on protests and marches
  • Donate to pro-EU groups
  • Read up on the news, it’s depressing but get informed

We have built this industry from the ground up and now it’s in jeopardy. Are you going to fight for it or are you going to let it slide away until it’s too late?

Tiffany Han on the Blogtacular Podcast

Tiffany Han is a life coach who teaches smart, driven women how to raise their hands and say yes to all the things they want to do, be, and say without compromising their standards—or their sanity. As the host of the Raise Your Hand Say Yes podcast (now in its fifth year with over 1.2 million downloads!), Tiffany is most interested in telling the truth about a life of chasing your dreams—tangles and all. She’s been featured by Inc.com, salon.com, and Flow Magazine and has delivered keynotes both domestically and abroad. With a penchant for keeping it real, her work focuses on how women can stop over-performing for the sake of the life that somebody else dictates for them and instead start saying yes to themselves.

Tiffany Han on the Blogtacular Podcast

Throughout her life, Tiffany has said yes to smart things, big things, and seemingly-impossible things (hello sobriety, starting a business, and having twins!), and along the way, she’s learned that the road to a fulfilled life that feels like freedom is paved with bold moves made from deep within our discomfort zones, a vast understanding of ourselves, and a communion with our core values. Tiffany lives in Northern Colorado with her husband and twin daughters and starts as many dance parties as possible in her spare time (ha!).
