Twitter Announces Changes to 140 Characters

Twitter Changes 140 Character Limit

Twitter released details today of long speculated changes to the 140 characters. Now don’t panic; the 140 limit is still in force, it’s just a little more flexible.

Currently when you tweet with an @mention, link or photo you would use up characters for each of them. Now twitter are allowing you to add in those elements without losing precious characters.

Here are the four big changes announced today:

  1. Replies: the characters in someone’s handle no longer count towards your 140 character limit. It’s not clear if this will bear out for conversations with multiple people but it certainly makes chatting easier.
  2. Attachments: pictures, gifs, quote tweets, polls and videos will also no longer count towards your 140. This has been long anticipated as the platform moves towards sharing varied media more widely and it means you can bring visuals into your tweets more frequently.
  3. Retweet Yourself: so long scheduling the same tweet repeatedly you can now retweet yourself and quote tweet yourself.
  4. Easy flouncing: ok, it’s not always a flounce but the .@mention is a thing of the past. Soon you’ll be able to click the rt button for it to be sent to all of your followers not just the ones the two of you share in common.

The changes will roll out over the next few months so expect to see lots of discussion around the subject.

There are also further improvements hinted at to boost some of the best aspects of twitter including live commentary. Read their full announcement here.

Blogtacular Creative Conference

Blogtacular 2016 was out of this world and every person involved put a huge amount in so you could get the most out of the event.

Our sponsors make Blogtacular possible and this year we were joined by another amazing line up of companies. SudoWest Elm, MicrosoftMollie MakesPinterest all gave so much to the event and we were honoured to work with them.

The photography sessions used props from West Elm and Capture by Lucy and the gorgeous flowers were supplied by Grace and Bloom.

Grace and Bloom also joined the Market Place this year alongside Fickle Craft Room, Anna Wiscombe, Waterstones and the Blogtacular Shop.

Photos were once again sponsored by Mollie Makes and taken by Will Ireland. University of Winchester School of Media and Film worked with Blogtacular to provide interns and to film the event.

Blogtacular 2016

The wealth of generosity and insight from our speakers was astounding. It’s no wonder you came away from Blogtacular with packed notebooks and buzzing minds given what they shared. And not just on stage but in Creative Genius Bar 1-2-1s, over the craft tables and on Video & Photowalks every single person involved gave us everything they had.

So many of you commented on how smoothly the day ran and while we can take a little credit the lionshare is due to Team Blogtacular who are so slick you barely know they are there. Our new venue also deserve a huge round of applause for exceptional service, AV and the food (still thinking about that curry!).

And finally the biggest thank you goes to everyone who shared the event, told their friends and who bought a ticket. Without your uplifting spirits Blogtacular wouldn’t be the vibrant, creative melting pot that it is and we love you all for it.

Using Instagram Stories

Using Instagram Stories

The internet is buzzing with news of Instagram taking the essence of Snapchat Stories and launching Instagram Stories. Here it is in their own words and if you don’t have it yet expect roll out to hit you fast.

Overnight you’ve been delivered the most powerful feature of Snapchat to a platform where you doubtless have a bigger following. Getting used to sharing less than perfect moments in pictures and videos that disappear after 24 hours is going to be your summer learning curve.

Here’s how to get started. From your home screen you can view other people’s stories (currently lined up in chronological order, now that’s refreshing Insta…).

To share your story click the + icon in the top left to open the camera or simply swipe the screen across. Here you’ll open the live camera which can face either way but can’t be swapped during recording. To take a photo, click the shutter once and release. To create a video, press and hold the icon for clips up to ten seconds long.

Getting Started With Instagram Stories Instagram Stories Getting Started

Once you have created your photo or video you can review it and embellish it before posting to your story. You can add any of the usual Instagram filters by swiping from right to left when your post is in review as well as adding text, emojis or drawing on the image.

Unlike normal Instagram posts your story won’t save unless you click the little arrow to download.

Posting to Instagram Stories Posting to Instagram Stories

Unlike Snapchat you can add images, videos and Boomerangs from your camera roll without a jailbreak. One catch – you must have created them in the last 24 hours (no doubt you can bypass this by saving from Dropbox – let us know if you find a workaround). To access your camera roll simply swipe down from the Stories screen.

Adding Video and Photos to Instagram Stories

When viewing Stories, unless you have all day, you’re going to want to speed things up. You can tap the screen to advance to the next segment of a story, swipe right to left to move on to the next person and down to exit stories. If you miss something swipe left to right to go back to the last story.

If you want to respond to someone’s story you can tap Send Message to send a DM as there is no public commenting or likes on Stories. As the inbox works currently you will be able to choose who can message you and turn off the feature. (Sidebar – have you noticed the roll out of comment moderation and no comments? Popping up on larger celebrity accounts so far.)

Using Instagram Stories

Want to know who has viewed your story? Watch it back and each segment has a number to show total views. Click the number to see exactly who has viewed your story and reach your story settings.

From this stats page you have another opportunity to download the post, upload it to your main Instagram feed or delete it.

Instagram Story Viewers

Click the cog from your stats screen and you’ll find the Story settings menu. From here you can hide your story from specific users (parents of teens be aware!) and decide who you’ll allow messages from. I have mine set to everyone and the inbox is filtering non-followers as usual so I get the choice to accept or decline the message.

Instagram Stories Settings

With the speed of roll out there is no doubt that Instagram is determined to make Stories a key feature. Now you know how to use it the question is: what will you be sharing in your stories?

Got more to say on this? Tweet us or open a discussion in our private Facebook group.

Kate O'Sullivan A Playful Day

This week I am joined by Kate O’Sullivan, podcaster, blogger and community maker.

Kate worked in special needs & mental health teaching and family support when she found herself burned out and needing a blog for her sanity. She started writing A Playful Day because she wanted to find a playful moment in every day and the response to the blog was huge. She added a podcast and from that her online career grew and developed.

In 2015 she relocated to Dorset from South London after following an interview which led to a rebrand and gave a solid direction to A Playful Day. Now the podcast is entirely community funded thanks to Patreon and provides supporter-only content as well as the main podcast.

Kate is a mother who lives in a very rural village on the Isle of Purbeck. She loves making and her passion is storytelling whether it’s images, audio or words.

Join Our Crowd Sourced Podcast

We are putting together a crowd sourced podcast ready for an injection of inspiration for 2017. We want to include as many voices from our community as possible and we need your help!

It would be great to get a cross section of bloggers and creatives in our community so even if you don’t blog we want to hear from you!

How to get involved:

Record yourself answering the following questions in one continuous recording, leaving a small pause between each question:

  • Your Name
  • Your Blog / Business Name

E.g. “I’m Kat Molesworth from Housewife Confidential.” or “Hello, it’s Kim and I run Finest Imaginary.”

  • What do you wish you had known when you started out?
  • What is your best piece of advice?
  • What does success mean to you?
  • What are you wishing for in 2017?

When you answer each question start it with the question e.g. “My best advice is…” feel free to add in something like new bloggers or Etsy sellers where relevant.

How to record:

Use a voice recording app on your phone – nice and simple. Voice Record Pro works well.

Hold the phone close you your mouth and sit in a space which has lots of soft furnishings (under a duvet is a good spot).

What if I go wrong?

If you fluff a word or sentence, leave a break, say it again and continue (just let us know to look out for it).

If you have a few problems or background noise please record again for the best chance of being used.

How to send:

You can share a Dropbox folder to katm @ blogtacular.com or WeTransfer to hello @ blogtacular.com. We can also provide a Dropbox folder for you to upload to, just drop us an email.

Please include your name, site link and any other social media links you want shared in the show notes.

Deadline:

Please send your recording by the end of 24th December 2016 (WeTransfers by 23rd please).

Thank you all so much for taking part, we can’t wait to hear the results!

Event photographer used to working long events (such as weddings or festivals) to capture the spirit, speakers, sponsors and fun moments at Blogtacular. We need a fast turn around on the edit so attendees are able to access the images the following day to use on their blog posts.

Must be prepared to have fun and climb a ladder. Full brief available on application.

VIDEOGRAPHER:

We are looking for a videographer to take on the video content at Blogtacular. This includes two full, hour long keynote sessions, general event coverage and interviews with the intention of creating short videos which communicate the spirit of Blogtacular for use online.

Please get in touch for a full brief or to book a call to discuss the job.

Apply – Send an email to hello at blogtacular.com with the subject: Photographer / Videographer (delete as appropriate). Tell us a bit about yourself, your work, style and pricing. We are able to provide a full brief of the event if you need it for costing.

We have grown over the last four years and are now at the point where we need to expand our team.

We are on the hunt for someone with an excellent black book and existing relationships in the field of lifestyle, interiors, beauty and technology to join our team on a freelance basis.

Apply – Send an email to hello at blogtacular.com with the subject: Event Sales. Tell us about yourself, your track record and we can take it from there.

CONFERENCE VOLUNTEERS:

Each year at our conference the day runs smoothly thanks to our volunteers. We are lucky to have a core team who have been with us since the start. Their feedback and hard work has helped to make Blogtacular an incredible experience for everyone who attends, sponsors and speaks. Team Blogtacular are a friendly and innovative bunch, we have our own group chat and get together via Skype to run down the day ahead of the event. There are perks such as being able to get on the photowalks without application.

OPERATIONS VOLUNTEERS:

This year our volunteer operations team is looking for two new members. This is not a pass to a free ticket, you may not be stationed in a workshop space for the whole conference. This is an opportunity to gain valuable experience in running an in person event. We will always write references and recommend people for future projects where needed.

We vary the work throughout the day, we start off early setting up the event and you could be creating photo backdrops, blowing up balloons, supporting stand building or handing out the coffees – we’re going to need them! During the day we operate the front desk, support the sponsors on site, ensure attendees are able to find their way around, support workshop hosts and everything else that comes with being the oil in the machine. At the end of the day we have a rapid break down and goody bag handing out. Where possible we switch roles so that you won’t be stuck in one place for the whole day. Tea and coffee are on tap, breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided. And yes, you get a goody bag, access to ticket holder groups, session recordings and invited to all social happenings outside of the conference.

WORKSHOP HOSTS:

In addition to our operations team we are looking for four confident workshop hosts to manage each room for the day.

You will manage the workshop spaces, ensure that any equipment is set up and cleared away before and after each session, liaise with the AV, event & operations teams. You will also be the person on the mic, yes, you will be introducing each speaker, handling the roving mic for the Q&A, thanking speakers and giving information at the end of sessions where necessary. This is a great role to take if you are interested to dip your toe into speaking as you get the experience of being in front of an audience without having to prepare a talk.

As a volunteer you’ll need to be able to travel to the venue in London on Saturday 10th June at 6:30am (told you we’d need coffee) and stick around until 6:30pm. We run a tight team so if there’s a possibility you might have something else on that weekend maybe wait until next year.

Apply – Send an email to hello at blogtacular.com with the subject: Volunteer Me! Tell us a bit about yourself and which role you see yourself fitting into. We will be replying to applications and filling positions in April 2017.
