Pitching Brands

$
0
0

When we ran a survey about making money from your blog over 90% of bloggers wanted to work with brands. On the flip side, most bloggers also reported that the majority of the brand approaches they received weren’t appropriate for their blog. So how do you bridge that gap? The answer is to reverse the relationship and pitch the brands you want to work with.

At Blogtacular 2015 Thomson are landing their plane and inviting bloggers to step aboard and pitch their holiday plans. All the good pitches will be going on holiday. I know, right? This week we held a webinar to talk about perfecting your pitch and here are our 5 tips for bloggers pitching brands.

5 Tips for Bloggers Pitching Brands

1. Research: doing your research on the brand and the kind of campaigns they have run before not only comes across well but it will tell you if your idea is replicating something they have already done. Find out everything about the product you are interested before you send your pitch or you could alienate them from the start.

2. Angle: having an angle to your pitch makes it unique. Think about the niche aspects of the product which fit with you, your audience and the brand then pitch that. For example, a guide to gluten free eating in Italy might be something that a travel company would want to feature on their blog.

3. Get Your Site Ready: when you pitch someone you should expect the first thing they will do is to check out your blog and social channels. Have your best content available to view and ensure that your site reflects what you have pitched. If you’re pitching an interiors brand, for example, but don’t have images from your home it’s unlikely they are going to be able to picture their product on your site.

4. Make Your Pitch Feel Like a Taste of The Content: you want to give the brand a taste of the milk without handing over the cow. Your approach should include examples of what you can do, it should be written in the voice you will use during the campaign and it should have the main points of what you are offering. By being really clear about what’s on offer and having it reflect your style there can be no confusion about what they’re signing up to.

5. Sell Yourself: let’s not hold back when it comes to talking about your achievements. Got great traffic with high engagement on social media? Have those stats in your pitch. Do you create stunning photos and videos? Make sure you shout about them. There is nothing to be gained in pitching by being modest. If you want a brand to work with you, you need to give them reasons to spend the budget on you and not one of the other seven people who pitched that day.

Nail these five points in your pitch and you’re on your way to successfully working with the brands you love.

What to Take to Blogtacular?

$
0
0

We are all getting excited about Blogtacular this Saturday. For those of you composing long lists of what to take here are our thoughts on what to have in your bag.

What to Pack for a Blog Conference?

1. Your phone – a conference all about blogging and social media really isn’t the same without being able to share it on the day. We are shareaholics at Blogtacular and #blogtacular is the tag to use on all of your posts and pictures so that everyone can find your posts. The RI has superb wifi and the passwords will be displayed throughout the building. Keep the latest email from Blogtacular handy so you know where you’re going and any last minute changes.

2. Battery / charger – on the flip side of having your phone out all day is losing power quickly. Carry your charger to plug in at our basement charge bar or have a battery pack in your bag which gives you several charges on the fly. We carry EasyAcc batteries which are a little bulky but do provide a day of energy.

3. Your cards – when you meet a few dozen people in one day keeping track of their names, let alone their blogs, can be tricky. A card for your blog gives people a reminder of who you are as well as easy ways to get in touch.

Blogtacular 2014 Official Photos by Will Ireland. Thanks Mollie Makes (299)

4. Notebook & Pen – this year we have notebooks from Baggage Reclaim and pens from Pinterest UK which will be handed out with your programme at the start of the day. For some of us having a reason to buy stationery is too much to resist!

5. A session plan – use the schedule and speaker pages to decide which sessions you most want to attend on the day. Of course things change in the moment but knowing what’s on offer will help you make split second choices. If you’re heading into the Creative Genius Bar have a couple of bullet points ready. You might want to load your site on your phone to show Annabel or Helena and if you’re asking Ashley for site advice you’ll need your login and password to hand.

6. Notes on Sponsors – if you are taking advantage of meeting the fantastic sponsors we have joining us at Blogtacular you might want to have some bullet points to look over before you head to their stand. Cricut, Annie Sloan and Thomson are at Blogtacular to make connections with you so take a look at what they are doing before you come and then pitch your ideas! If you need some help check out our pitching post and webinar.

7. Name Badge – we don’t use name badges or lanyards for many reasons but mostly because they ruin your outfit. We can’t be having that now. You will be given a wrist band when you check in at reception which will give you entry to the conference and evening Pintacular. If you feel more comfortable using a name badge with your blog name and social media handles then get crafty and make something spectacular to wear.

8. Train snacks – if you’re doing the whole conference in just one day take along some snacks for the train up and down so you don’t have to rely on overpriced trolleys.

Of course at the conference we will have light snacks at breaks and a sandwich lunch for you to enjoy. The evening Pintacular will have a light meal with a fiesta theme but you may want to grab something to eat with friends before you head over there.

9. Camera? – This is down to personal choice, some stick to their phone camera while others want to have a DSLR along for the day. High quality photos will be available after the event thanks to Mollie Makes. You are welcome to use the official photos, with credit, on your blogs and social media. If you’re doing several photography sessions you might want to have a camera with you to use or you might like to capture photos from your point of view. The downer about bringing a DSLR is the weight and by ten o’clock you might be cursing it!

10. Big or small bag? – The venue has a cloakroom to check large bags and coats while you enjoy the conference. If you’re setting out early and staying out until late you might enjoy having a lightweight bag which you can always slip inside your goody bag after the conference. Personally, I’m trying to go small (although I think it will end up being BIG!)

What else do you have in your bag? Tweet us and let us know.

Want to know what to wear? We dedicated a whole twitter chat to just this topic, you can read it all below. Our tips are to go for what makes you comfortable and leaves you feeling like your true self.

10 Tips for an Awesome Photowalk

$

An instawalk with friends is one of the most fun ways to spend an afternoon. Finding interesting compositions and playing in front of the camera can’t be beaten.

At Blogtacular we have a photowalk each year where bloggers take over the streets literally stopping traffic with their antics. This year the walk is led by Xanthe Berkeley and Samee Latham who, together with West Elm, will be in search of London Scenes.

To get everyone in the mood (and for your very own photowalk) here are Xanthe’s tips for having fun on a photowalk.

Blogtacular Photowalk Picture by Xanthe Berkeley

1. Charge your batteries and clear your memory. You won’t want the fun to be cut short by your camera running out of space.

2. Dress for all weathers, you want to be prepared for rain or shine.

3. Wear fun or coloutful outfits especially if you are on a walk where you’ll be photographins each other. You want shoes that are either comfy or photogenic depending on your preference.

4. Take water, snacks or even both. You don’t want to feel drained or have to stop for a drink halfway along a walk.

5. Relax and feel free to get your camera out. Everyone is at different levels and that’s ok. Photowalks are about having fun and seeing the world around you in a different way. Don’t get caught up on comparing your skills or equipment. Feel free to ask questions about gear, apps and what you like to shoot. Most people are willing to share.

Blogtacular Photowalk Picture by Katy Orme

6. Shoot your surroundings in different ways – look up, get in close, shoot wide, shoot along the ground. Try and capture what you see in a creative way. Try and shoot something new to you. Look for interesting light, textures, shapes, lines and colours. See how other people on the walk approach the same subject differently and try something new.

7. If you like photographing people ask someone to pose for you and then swap over. No one really likes having their picture taken, but most people like to practice. Have fun with people photos – make portraits and try group shots. If you feel nervous in front of the camera try having just one person take your picture instead of the whole group.

8. A good photowalk is equal parts shooting and conversation. Chat and make friends, but also take photos!

Blogtacular Photowalk Picture by Xanthe Berkeley

9. Shoot in abundance, play and experiment. You never know what blog posts your photos will inspire or which images you’ll want to upload so shoot everything and have fun with trying new things.

10. Finally. There are no rules really, and often it’s the spontaneous element which is wonderful.

Big Changes to Instagram and How to Make the Most of Them

$

The changes to Instagram this August are possibly some of the most significant since they took away the frames.

Instagram Size and Location Changes and How to Make the Most of them

Last week, Instagram announced that you can now upload portrait and landscape photos and videos alongside the traditional square images. These images appear natively in your feed as you upload them (so without needing to add white frames via a 3rd party app as previously), but are  square cropped to centre in your gallery.  This is great news for group shots and widescreen videos and it means you don’t have to just consider the square for composition. However, not everyone is happy with this – some shaking their heads about the loss of Insta’s square format while others are frustrated with the lack of choice for the gallery thumbnail.

PicMonkey Collage

Changes to Direct Messaging

While many people have focussed on the format, Instagram has made some other incredibly powerful changes to the platform.

While scrolling through your feed you can now tap the arrow button to send a photo via DM. This makes Instagram’s direct mail a much more social place. Send photos to your friends directly from your feed.  You can also send photos to yourself, instead of taking a screenshot, to keep your  inspiration in one handy place.

Locations are the New Hashtags

Instagram has also enabled a search by location function. This means that geotagging your photos is now a great way to get discovered. Instagram uses Facebook Places, so if you are a business with a bricks and mortar shop, its a good idea to add your location to that so people can tag your location. Our advice is to start geotagging your photos now, because as in the early days of hastagging, its going to be a great way for other users to find you.

The other great news is that you can now tag older photos with their actual location rather than just the location you are when you post them and you don’t have to go through a 3rd party app like Mappr to do it.  Simply search by location name.

Speaking of searching, make sure to check out the awesome improvements to the search and explore functions, making it easier to find photos, people and places, as well as other awesome accounts to connect with.

Kate: What Blogtacular Meant to Me

We love to read all of the blog posts and comments after Blogtacular each year. The feedback makes us work harder and your successes inspire us to do more.

Below is an email sent in to us by Kate (pictured left) from A Playful Day and it just fills our hearts with joy. Thanks for sharing Kate!

Blogtacular is back on June 18th 2016

When I discovered Blogtacular for the first time, I was ready for change. I had been blogging & hosting a podcast for a number of years but really wanted to grow that space. I had a lifelong dream of being a writer and had always hoped the blog would be an entry point into that career.

Taking part in the Blogtacular Twitter chats was a game changer and I connected with a community that truly inspired and filled me with creativity. I saw the potential of what I could do and began to use the excellent advice to develop and grow.

Attending was incredible! The inspiration, the joy and the supportiveness. There was a strong sense of collaboration not competition which was incredibly empowering in helping me find my voice as a writer and blogger.

Since attending, I’ve guest posted in other spaces, pitched (and got) several articles and collaborated with other bloggers whose work I’ve long admired. The incredibly supportive atmosphere Kat and Kat have managed to create was the beginning of me investing in myself. The level of brands and speakers they introduced into my life had me brimming with excitement and I just can’t believe how lucky I am to be a part of the Blogtacular community.

The cherry on top was seeing an article I pitched to The Pool on the front page of their website! I met Sam Baker when she was a speaker at the event and her words made me stand up and cheer. We continued chatting after the event and when I pitched her an article idea, I felt ready for the challenge.

It’s still growing, it’s still all so new but I wouldn’t be on this journey without Blogtacular. It’s why I signed up immediately for next year’s event. I can’t wait to attend!

For that, I am enormously grateful.

Will you be joining us in 2016?

West Elm Blogtacular Photowalk 2015 Official Photos by Piers MacDonald - Thanks Mollie Makes (20)

There have been rumours since last year that Instagram was bringing in account switching and it has finally started to roll out. Some recent changes have been met with annoyance (looking at you Read More…) but account switching has been longed for by many.

Yes, some iOS users (sorry Android!) will be able to switch accounts with the latest update. While logging in and out wasn’t the end of the world it did have some notable disadvantages, not least of which was losing your recent hashtag list.

With account switching you can flip between accounts to like, comment and share with ease. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your account page, click settings.
  2. Scroll down to add account (if it’s not there, try updating the app).
  3. Enter the username and password.
  4. You’re done!
How to Add Multiple Instagram Accounts - I have been waiting for this for so long!

You can now switch back and forth in the profile page using the drop down at the top. The bottom right icon displays the profile picture of the selected account so you don’t make a mistake!

Stop What You Are Doing and Try Pinterest’s Visual Search Tool

Pinterest Visual Search is Unreal. Stop What You are Doing, You Have to Try This!

Pinterest is my number one destination for planning and dreaming. I’m not alone, with over 10 million monthly active users in the UK alone Pinterest is booming right now.

There is so much great stuff happening at Pinterest UK over the next few months but one soft product launch caught my eye last week. You can zoom in on sections of images and Pinterest will deliver similar items.

Honestly, my mind was blown when I saw this in action. Like a bag in a street style photo? Zoom in and find not only the bag you like but also visually similar bags.

Pinterest Visual Search Zoom 4

Here’s how it works. Open up a pin to full page view and click the magnifying glass in the top right corner.

Pinterest Visual Search Zoom Tool - the most amazing product update of 2016

Drag the corners of the zoom frame to cover the item or section you are interested in and the results pop up.

Pinterest Visual Search Zoom 1

Once you have your search results you can use the search terms in the top right corner to refine the results. In our example of a maxi skirt we had results for different garments including palazzo pants but by clicking maxi skirt we have results which are all skirts.

Pinterest Visual Search Zoom Refine Search

Not only can you zoom in on individual items but also get more specific and search for patterns which match your source image.

Pinterest Visual Search Zoom

And it doesn’t just work with products as Leanne demonstrated when I tweeted about this last week:

The applications for this update are promising and it is going to cut down on hours of web searching for products spotted in and image. Cut out the effort, upload the image to Pinterest, zoom and let the results come to you.

Google Clarifies Links for Blog Reviews

$
0
0
Important Read for all Bloggers. Google have clarified their linking policy for review posts.

Last week Google clarified their position on linking from review posts. If you are blogging about products which you have been sent or experiences which you did not pay for this applies to you.

We know what the law is in the UK and the ASA have previously offered guidance to bloggers. Now Google have published a post which makes it crystal clear how they expect you to be linking not just product links but also social sites, apps and review sites. This is to ensure that links which are generated because a company wants to promote their product or service are not linked as organic links.

Google might not be the law but falling foul of Google Webmaster Guidelines can see your site wiped off search and it can take months to get back.

What they say:

1. Use nofollow tags where goods or services have been exchanged.

  • This includes links to:
  • Company websites
  • Related social media accounts
  • Third party sites selling the product or service
  • A review service with reviews of the product
  • The company’s app or links to the app store

2. Disclose the relationship

Just as you would to comply with ASA guidance you need to disclose that what people are reading has been paid for in some way. Google state: “A disclosure can appear anywhere in the post; however, the most useful placement is at the top in case users don’t read the entire post.”

3. Create compelling content

Yes, Google want you to create a blog which gives people a reason to keep coming back again. Create content which is useful or enriching and you will build an audience who trusts you.

What should I do about old content?

The best practice advice on this is to ge back through all of your old posts which feature links to products, services etc and change the links to nofollow links.

How do I make a nofollow link?

In the text or html editor locate your link (in long posts I add in a HERE next to links so I can scan for them easily) and add the code: rel=”nofollow” right after the web address.

Here’s an example:

Before: <a href=”http://blogtacular.com”>Blogtacular</a>

After: <a href=”http://blogtacular.com” rel=”nofollow”>Blogtacular</a>

There are plugins which will help you amend wordpress sites at the touch of a button but do read the reviews carefully before using.

Will this change how I work with PRs?

Most approaches you get from PRs are about being in front of your audience rather than building links. A NoFollow link policy in your media pack can help to make this clear and head off any misunderstandings.

I have been asked not to disclose a review product or service, what should I do?

The long answer: Here you now meet both Google (not the law) and the ASA for UK bloggers (actually the law). Both are saying all reviews should be disclosed so the reader knows from the outset that you did not pay. The ASA doesn’t care if you use a nofollow link or not but will care if you don’t disclose a relationship, people have been fined and it’s not worth the risk. Google care about both and you can bet this guidance comes ahead of another algorithm shift towards penalising sites which do not meet these requirements.

The short answer: If you value your site’s integrity; say thanks but no thanks.

Can I promote my own business?

If you are writing a blog specifically for your business and the business owns the blog then yes, linking to your business from your blog with follow links should be fine. If you are cross promoting between businesses consider using nofollow links to make it absolutely water tight.

When can I use follow links?

Google values organic links and uses them to build powerful search products. Every product, site, event, blog you link to shares your PageRank with their site.

The higher your PR the more Magic Google Juice (what? that’s what it’s called!) is shared with the other site. Sites which have lots of links pointing to them over long periods of time from a variety of sources are ranked well by Google. If you love something link to it and you will be part of that site’s success.
